Allah revealed in the Qur`an [Surah Al ^Imran (S3) Ayah 31]:
In this verse, Allah orders the Prophet ﷺ to say to the people, if you love Allah then follow me and you will gain the acceptance of Allah. We know from this honourable verse that to follow the Prophet ﷺ will lead to the acceptance of Allah and a successful Hereafter, whether that is something the Prophet ﷺ ordered us to do or it is something that the Prophet ﷺ ordered us to leave out. Following the Prophet ﷺ in these matters is what will grant a person safety and success on the Day of Judgement.
Among what the Prophet ﷺ warned us against and told us to leave out is to imitate the non-Muslims in practices which are exclusive to them. Among the Hadiths that the Prophet mentioned regarding this is the one mentioned by Al-Imam Al-Bukhariyy, whereby the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
لَتَتَّبِعُنَّ سَنَنَ مَنْ قَبْلَكُمْ شِبْرًا بِشِبْرٍ وَذِرَاعًا بِذِرَاعٍ
In this hadith the Prophet warned the Muslims, and said: a time will come where they will imitate others bit by bit, cubit by cubit, handspan by handspan. Imitating the non-Muslims in what they do. Until the Prophet ﷺ said:
حَتَّى لَوْ سَلَكُوْا جُحْرَ ضَبٍّ لَسَلَكْتُمُوهُ
that, even if the non-Muslims were to enter the pit of a lizard, then you O Muslims, some of you, would follow them in that.
If we know of a custom/habit exclusive for the Christians, the Jews, the idol-worshippers or other than them from among the non-Muslims then we as Muslims need to be aware to not follow them in that. This includes acts like Halloween, Bonfire night and other than that. Therefore we should not be seeing people dressed up as devils and witches, especially since these are things that the Prophet of Allah ﷺ was ordered to seek refuge from and taught us to seek refuge from. Also the Prophet ﷺ said:
مَنْ تَشَبَّهَ بِقَوْمٍ فَهُوَ مِنْهُمْ
In this hadith narrated by Abu Dawud, the Prophet ﷺ warned us from imitating the non-Muslims or else we will face a similar judgement of sin like them.
Hence we need to keep up with our practises and our customs as Muslims and follow the Prophet ﷺ and be aware not to follow the non-Muslims in what is for them so that we would be safe from their sin. May Allah protect us and our children from following what the Prophet ﷺ warned us against. And enable us to remain steadfast with what the Prophet ordered us with.
